What’s the Obsession with Candid Photos?

I love nothing more than an authentic candid wedding photo, where my couple or their guests are in the moment, soaking up the day. Wedding photos have become more candid over the years and I think I know a few reasons why…

  1. Evolving Aesthetic Preferences: Modern couples often prefer a more natural and authentic look in their wedding photos. Candid shots can capture genuine emotions and moments, which many find more appealing than traditional, posed photographs. In my opinion, you can stand in a field and get family portraits another day. Let’s have fun!

  2. Documentary and Photojournalistic Styles: Many contemporary wedding photographers adopt a documentary or photojournalistic approach. These styles emphasize storytelling and aim to capture the real essence of the day by focusing on unscripted moments.

  3. Relaxed Wedding Atmosphere: Weddings have become more relaxed and informal in recent years, with couples opting for less traditional ceremonies. This change in the overall wedding atmosphere naturally leads to more candid moments that are worth capturing.

  4. Changing Photography Technology: Advances in photography technology, such as faster autofocus systems and the rise in popularity of direct flash, have made it easier for photographers to capture spontaneous moments. This has reduced the need for posed and staged shots.

  5. Social Media and Sharing: The rise of social media and the desire to share wedding photos with friends and family online has increased the demand for candid, shareable images. Couples often want their photos to reflect their personalities and relationships, which candid shots can do effectively.

  6. Photographer Expertise: Experienced wedding photographers are skilled at capturing candid moments and have the ability to blend into the background, making it easier to get natural shots without intrusion.

  7. Emotional Connection: Candid photos tend to evoke stronger emotional connections because they capture genuine reactions and interactions, allowing viewers to relive the emotions of the day.

Couples today often prioritize capturing the real moments and emotions of their special day, making candid photography a popular choice. Here are a few weddings we’ve produced that were captured beautifully and candidly by these amazing photographers:
